如何简单写出让AO眼前一亮的美研文书！
每年一到九月新的美研申请季来临，文书就可以构思酝酿起来了。对文书有所了解的同学可能发现，美研文书的类型看起来还挺多的：
有PS、SOP、PHS、Essay、Video Essay，有的还有Diverse Statement，可谓是品种多样，问法不一。
那么如何从这些不同的题目中找到匹配我们个人经历的点，并将它们对应到具体的文书要求中去呢？今天就通过带大家阅读几个学校的文书题目，来理一理不同文书类型之间相通的行文逻辑。
我们先来阅读几个学校文书题目的要求：
伯克利工学院SOP和PHS
Two Essays
Applicants are required to complete two essays. Although we do not have a requiredminimum or maximum word count, the suggested length of each is around 1 to 2 pagessingle-spaced.
Statement of Purpose
This essay question was created to provoke honest, thoughtful responses to help us get toknow you. The admissions committee is interested in learning how your professional andacademic experiences and achievements equip you and motivate you to enroll in ourprogram. At a minimum, the Statement of Purpose should indicate, with clarity and focus,your purpose for entering the Master of Engineering program and why this advances yourprofessional and personal goals. We are especially interested in understanding both yourexperience in and your capacity to take full advantage of an intensive, fast-paced degreeprogram.
Personal History Statement
Anything that can give reviewers a sense of you as a person belongs here; you can repeatinformation about your experiences in your Statement of Purpose, but any experiences thatshow your promise, initiative, and ability to persevere despite obstacles belongs here. If youhave faced any obstacles or barriers in your education, sharing those experiences provides adeeper understanding of who you are as an applicant. If one part of your academic record isnot ideal, due to challenges you faced, this is where you can explain that, and directreviewers' attention to the evidence of your promise for higher education.

Video Essay
• The video essay will allow you to demonstrate your communication skillsand show your personality.
• You will be asked a question and will have multiple practice runs beforeyou record your answer.
• The video essay is short (under 2 minutes) and is another data point forthe admissions committee to learn about you.
通读题目我们发现无论是文科理工科还是商科，大部分的文书要求其实区别不算特别大，基本上都会包括下面这几点内容：
1. Why school，why this program
2. 从Experiences 到 Interests
3. 努力、收获与不足
4. Further plan/Career goal
5. Contribution
如果我们能把这几个问题想清楚，再用通顺、流畅的文笔表达出来，就可以写出一篇甚至几篇不错的申请文书。下面我们就来聊聊在Brainstorm的过程中，应该从哪些方面来思考这几个问题。
1. Why school Why this program
这是个老生常谈的问题，是学校向申请者发出的灵魂拷问，就像情侣之间问“你为啥喜欢我”一样经典——学校也想知道你为啥选它而不是别人。
我们不得不去思考这个问题，因为这确实是大学申请过程中最被看重的一个方面——申请动机。
动机不纯或者动机太过牵强都可能会给申请减分，想要不减分甚至有所加分，需要把这个动机说得细致一点。
比如对哪位教授的哪个研究方向比较感兴趣，对哪门课程的学习内容感兴趣，对学校项目里面的具体安排感兴趣（co-op实习机会、study abroad了解不同文化的机会、或者是学校的具体氛围等等）。
充满细节的描述可提高动机的可信度，也显示出申请者提前做了功课，对学校项目有比较深入的了解。
2. 从Experiences 到 Interests从Background 到 Program
一般个人的背景和经历会影响到自己的兴趣发展，同时个人兴趣也会促使申请者去做某个领域的事。
你和项目之间的距离就看背景和经历是否合适，因此需要从众多的经历中提取出与申请领域相关的部分。通过阐释各个方面经历对你的兴趣和想要申请专业的启发和影响，明确自己的申请动机和目的。
同时也要重点阐释的是以往经历对你的兴趣养成，直到申请研究生项目提供了怎样的支撑和帮助，如：
课外活动对于领导力、团队合作能力等方面的提升；
实习经历对于行业洞见、职业能力的培养；
科研经历对于学术能力的提升，文献阅读与思维能力的培养等。
这些经历会帮助AO了解你为什么要申请这个项目，让你与项目产生连结。
3. 努力、收获与不足
上一个部分，我们思考了经历——兴趣——申请项目之间的联系与支撑，在这个部分，需要重点思考在这些经历里为了解决问题，我们做出了哪些努力，以及得到了哪些收获。
说明这点的目的是为了证明你在已有资源的基础上已经做出了最大的努力，取得了一定的成果，能力也获得了提升。
但这个成果和能力一定是有限的：你不能躺平不努力，不努力说明动机不强；也不能太努力，努力过头能力提升太多了就不需要接着读书，直接工作就行了。
所以必须得卡在这个有提升又不太够的情况下，才能给学校一种你确实应该来申请我们的项目，才能弥补得了以往的经历确实让你的知识技能稍有欠缺的感觉，进而让AO觉得录取你的理由很充分。
4. Further plan/Career goal
思考到这个问题说明你的文书思路梳理已经进入收尾阶段，来到展望未来的环节。
Further plan一般比较常出现在理工科的申请文书问题中，可能博士文书里面出现的概率更高一些。可以考虑的方向分为在校计划和毕业后计划这两个方面：
在校计划一般是以后主要做什么研究方向，重点在什么问题上做出一些突破，实现什么样的科研目标；
毕业后的计划则更长远一些，比如毕业后读博、寻求教职、去科研机构继续做研究等发展方向。
Career goal则一般出现在商科/管理相关的专业里面，思考方向也是毕业后做什么。描述的时候可能涉及到什么行业里面做什么方面的工作，也有可能精确到具体公司的具体岗位，体现职业发展目标的明确性。
5. Contribution
这个问题美本的同学应该比较熟悉，美国大学比较看重Diversity和Contribution。
上面几个问题实际上我们思考的是Motivation和Passion的内容，到这个问题，让我们来换位思考一下如果学校录取了你，你将会给Community带来什么不一样的东西。
这包括文化、族裔的多样化，或者是性格、特长、领导力等方面的影响力，能让人觉得是独特、有趣的一方面。
一般来说偏文的项目可能涉及到Contribution的题目多一些，如你读完这个项目之后，会考虑在什么领域发光发热，给社会带来什么样的福祉，改善哪些人群的生活状态，都是很好的思考方向。
最后总结
上面六点的内容思考过后，你会对之前的人生经历有一个比较全面的梳理反思。
你会从申请动机开始讲起，讲到自己喜欢上这个方向并为之付出了多少努力，发现了一些问题，也意识到了自己的局限性。
正在你苦苦寻找解决方案的时候，某个学校的项目出现在了你的面前，如同命运的指引，你决定申请这个项目。
从这个项目毕业之后你会为解决这个问题、为社会做出贡献而继续努力。

当然，有一些“非主流”的Essay如Duke商学院的25件小事，这种类型不在本文的讨论范畴。不过我们仍然可以在分析问题和反思的过程中，了解到换位思考的重要性，进而写出让AO眼前一亮的文书。
